5 Signs That Your Partner Is Abusive

Domestic abuse can happen to anyone regardless of sex, religion, color, or location.  Although the signs of abuse aren’t always visible to the eye, the pain is nevertheless just as intense after any form of abuse from a partner.

One of the biggest reasons why people tend to stay in a relationship with an abusive person is often because they don’t realize their partner’s behavior is abusive.   They may question themselves and continue living in a toxic environment out of fear that they are the one at fault.

In order to break free and end the cycle of abuse, it’s important to look for the warning signs.  Here are some of the biggest indications that you’re in a relationship with an abusive partner.

Physical Violence

The most obvious form of abuse is physical violence.  If your partner has laid a hand on you, it’s important to call the police.  If you are in fact being physically harmed, they will go to jail as a result.

It’s important to reach out for help since they may get out on bail and attempt to hurt you further for taking legal action.  Always call a friend or family member after a physical dispute and make sure that you have a safe place to stay.

Controlling

If your partner is always the one who makes the decisions for you, then it’s definitely a sign of abuse. In a healthy relationship, each person should be able to have their own voice and opinions which the other partner respects and considers.

However, in a toxic relationship, the abused partner’s feelings aren’t taken into consideration whatsoever.  There is only one opinion in the household that matters, and the other must remain subservient.

Overly Possessive

Overly possessive partners get jealous about any little thing. For a very Jealous Partner, the smallest glance in the wrong way, or behaving in a way which they feel is attention seeking could lead to a massive explosion.

Abusive people are usually that way as a result of their own insecurities. Therefore, they will lash out at the slightest indication that you aren’t giving them your full attention and loyalty.

They Have Destroyed Your Personal Belongings

Short tempers often lead to destructing physical belongings.  If your partner has ever broken something of yours during a moment of heated passion, then you should consider this abusive behavior.

Anger doesn’t have to be expressed physically in order to be released.  Breaking things during a fit of rage is usually an indication of anger issues which should be addressed by a professional.

They Belittle You
If your partner is frequently putting you down to put themselves up, then you are a victim of abuse.  Belittling and bullying are forms of neglect and abusive behavior.  Even though it may not be physical abuse, words can be just as painful.
